We’re big fans of the unusual cushioning on On Running’s roster of shoes. Yes, they look a little strange with those bottom pods, but they also perform incredibly well. With the Cloudventure, the Swiss outfit finally brings those unusual soles to trail running, boasting what they’re calling “the ultimate lightweight trail running shoe.”

Like the rest of their lineup, the shoes sport “cloud” pods on the outsole that deliver a unique combination of cushioning and responsiveness. This time around, however, they’re thinner, softer, and have less internal room to help better offset the forces involved in downhill running, with micro-engineered lugs made from four different grip-rubber surfaces integrated into the outsole for aggressive traction. Whether you’re running on slippery rocks, slushy mud, or paved city roads, the micro-engineered sole surface should keep you in control the entire time.

The On Cloudventure pairs that outsole with a two-layer upper consisting of a breathable mesh exterior and a sock-like inner layer that wraps the foot in a snug fit. It comes with rubber reinforcements on the toe, heel, and sides to provide protection on hazardous trails, while a thick collar wraps the heel with a tight and secure hold. Features include DWR coating for keeping out water, a beefy midsole with a flexible plastic plate providing responsive lever during toe-off, laces that tighten all the way to the toes with one pull, and a light weight of 10.1 oz.
