To the unfamiliar, Super Dux was the original name of the outfit’s outdoor clothing line, which made its debut way back in the 1930s. That’s right, just a decade shy of a full century. It was pretty popular, peaking around the 70s before ultimately getting retired. This year, they’re bringing it back for a line of cold weather essentials.
The Carhartt Super Dux Relaxed Fit Insulated Bib Overall takes the classic workwear garment and beefs it up for the colder weather, starting with a durable 7.75-ounce nylon construction with the outfit’s Rain Defender water-repellent and wind-repellent finish. According to the outfit, the reduced weight of the nylon makes the garment feel great for active days, whether you’re moving stuff around the farm, fixing a bunch of things at a job site, or just working on your giant mech in the underground lab.
It has a quilted lining for warmth that’s further insulated with 80 grams of 3M’s Thinsulate material from the waist down, making it a perfectly suitable cold weather outer layer for your lower body, while the bib and brace up top keeps the chilly air from entering through the waist. For the upper section, it gets Sherpa fleece lining to help maintain warmth, while looking nice layered over a shirt or under a thick puffy jacket. Carhartt actually rates it at Level 4 for insulation, which is their ranking for their garments that are suitable for the coldest weather. We know… it doesn’t look like it, but we bet that Thinsulate has a lot to do with why it looks so streamlined while being so warm.
Designed for rugged performance at work, the Carhartt Super Dux Relaxed Fit Insulated Bib Overall boasts seam-to-seam double front construction, along with double front knees, so you can get down for extended periods without damaging the garment. It has reinforced kick panels to ward off the usual wear and tear, while storm flaps provide extra protection during downpours. It has a zip-to-knee leg opening, by the way, in case you need to accommodate large boots for walking in the snow.
For storage, you get a multi-compartment pocket on the bib, a zippered front pocket, two reinforced back pockets, and two large ledge pockets along the waist. It also has a hammer loop for holding a hand tool on the right side. Other features include front-adjustable elastic suspenders, a zip fly closure, triple stitched main seams, and metal rivets at vital stress points. It comes in two colors, black and brown, so you can get it dirty without looking all that grimy.
