We’ve seen all sorts of fitness trackers in recent years. There are ones you wear on your wrist, some you wear on your ankles, and even ones you clip to your shoes. The Under Armour HOVR Phantom 2 makes all of those unnecessary by integrating the run monitoring and analysis right on your running footwear.
That’s right, these shoes have actual electronic components embedded in the sole, allowing you to get full running metrics without having to wear a goofy-looking wristband or replace your favorite Rolex with a GPS sports watch. Basically, if you want to track your runs without wearing any additional gadgets, this is the way to go.
The Under Armour HOVR Phantom 2 are performance running shoes that boast 360-degree foot comfort and a high-energy feel that should help boost your runs with every stride. At least, we hope that’s what it does. Key to that comfort is a sock-like fit with cushioning all throughout, essentially covering your feet in soft barrier for gentle protection, along with a breathable and moisture-wicking sock liner to keep things as dry as possible inside the footwear. Joining all that is a molded midfoot panel that provides the necessary structure, all while serving as a plush interior cushion for the bottom of your feet.
It uses a flat-knit upper to deliver both stretch and support at strategic zones, allowing you to run freely the way you want without your footwear getting in the way, while the combination of a compression mesh material and the outfit’s responsive HOVR foam provides the energy return that keeps your feet feeling good with every step. That upper, is fused to a full rubber outsole that uses a unique knobbed texture to provide elevated traction and durability, while an external heel counter delivers added stability for much needed support.
The Under Armour HOVR Phantom 2’s main selling point, of course, is the embedded activity tracking tech inside the sole. That’s right, it’s inside the sole, so it’s shielded from any potential damage that can be caused by impact and water, ensuring you can wear this like any other running shoe, regardless of your location and the prevailing weather. To use it, start by downloading the UA MapMyRun app and pair it with the chip in the shoes. From there, you start your run, trusting all of your data is faithfully recorded on the companion app.
Aside from logging your running stats, the app also includes a real-time form coach, which can provide instructions about any adjustments you can make while you’re running. Just pair your favorite sport earbuds to the phone to make sure you hear every update, since we doubt you’re going to hear that tinny speaker in your phone while it sits in your running belt, armband, or wherever else you’ve got it stashed. Oh yeah, you will have to bring your phone with you through all your runs, which, we guess, would be the main downside, compared to fitness trackers with built-in storage that you can simply sync once you get back home.
The Under Armour HOVR Phantom 2 is available now, priced at $150.
