Regular camera straps aren’t exactly flimsy pieces of gear. As long as you don’t buy the cheapest ones at the bargain bin, chances are, they’ll hold up through many, many uses. If you’re looking for one with a slightly more rugged aesthetic than your typical leather strap, though, then you have to check out Topo Designs’ Climbing Rope Camera Strap.

That’s right, those same heavy-duty ropes climbers use to ensure safety during cragging, whipping, and projecting have been repurposed to serve as functional camera straps. Granted, ultra-tough climbing rope is overkill for carrying a three pound equipment around your neck for an entire day, but it sure looks awesome doing it.

The Topo Designs Climbing Rope Camera Strap consists of a 10.5 mm climbing rope that’s attached to a nylon webbing, so you can put it on your DSLR the same way as any other neck strap. It measures 26.5-inches long total (both the climbing rope and webbing), with slight adjustments available via the integrated sliplocks. Because it uses climbing rope for the area that hooks around your neck, it should deliver an excellent grip, ensuring it will stay in place rather than move around or roll on the shoulder during movement. And, yes, you can still totally wear Matador’s Camera Base Layer over your rig with this strap in tow.
