Over the last couple of years, mobile speakers have gotten progressively better. While previous efforts seemed to focus on simply delivering a loud alternative to your phone’s tinny-sounding sound pipes, newer models actually manage to deliver crisp and dynamic audio. If you’re looking for the best sound experience in a portable package that you can conveniently drop in a bag, though, we imagine it’s going to hard to top the KEF Muo.

Using a proprietary, miniaturized version of their Uni-Q point source driver array (the ones that power the company’s £140,000 Muon speakers), the speakers boast a proven and highly-acclaimed pedigree. And while the portable speaker obviously isn’t going to bring the same fidelity as its larger sibling, KEF claims their smaller creation will still deliver “full-bodied, stunningly clear sound” – a claim we’re inclined to believe, considering all the early reviews we’ve seen of the unit so far.

Designed by Ross Lovegrove, the KEF Muo boasts an “extremely strong molded internal enclosure” to house the actual hardware, with an acoustically-inert aluminum body serving as the outer shell. Like similar speakers in the category, it can pair with an audio source over Bluetooth or via 3.5 mm input, all while having the ability to work on its own, pair with another speaker in stereo mode, or stream whatever its playing to the paired speaker in “dual connect party mode” for extra-loud sound. It even has an internal sensor that detects whether it’s positioned upright or horizontally, adjusting the output to deliver the same acoustic depth and definition, as well as a battery that can keep it running for up to 12 hours of playback.
