GoRuck x Huckberry Slick GR1 Backpack A special edition of the classic GR1, this Huckberry collab offers an understated and streamlined version of the bag for everyday city use.

We’re big fans of the GR1 backpack, which multiple publications have continually included in their best backpack lists all through the years. It’s so good, in fact, it continues to appear on those lists up to now, almost taking a permanent place as one of the best bags in contemporary history. The GoRuck x Huckberry Slick GR1 is a special edition of the popular backpack that’s been tweaked for a sleeker look, making it even more suitable as an everyday city backpack.

A limited edition collaboration, the bag resurrects a special version of the GR1 – one that hasn’t been around for a decade. Huckberry bills it as an “understated, streamlined version” of the bag, making it an attractive pickup even for long-time GR1 users.

The GoRuck x Huckberry Slick GR1 takes the original GR1, dresses it in all black, and removes the MOLLE webbing outside the pack. This creates a cleaner look for the backpack, although it does remove the potential utility of daisy-chaining a bunch of other gear on its exterior. Truth be told, we like this sleeker version, which looks much better for everyday city use compared to the tactical appearance of all that MOLLE connectors in the standard version.

Aside from the MOLLE webbing, the rest of the bag remains unchanged. That means, you still get military grade materials, such as 1000-denier Cordura for the body, two layers of 1000-denier Cordura for the base, and the bombproof laptop compartment. As such, it will shrug off water as capably as the best water-resistant bags out there, all while resisting tearing and puncturing with its ultra-rugged build. According to Huckberry, the bag has been tested to carry 400 pounds of payload, which means you can carry literal weight plates, dumbbells, and kettlebells on this thing without damaging it.

The GoRuck x Huckberry Slick GR1 comes in two sizes: 21 liters and 26 liters. The outfit claims the former is sized proportionally for folks under six feet and the latter for the taller folks out there. Other than the size, though, both models of the bag are the same. There’s room, for instance, for a 3-liter hydration bladder, with an exit port for the hydration tube under the top carry handle, while the same compartment can double as a laptop slot for holding computers up to 17 inches. The laptop/hydration compartment, by the way, has a false bottom that should protect your laptop when you suddenly drop your bag (sometimes, you just get tired and do silly things).

Like the standard version, the bag can open flat for easy packing and unpacking, allowing you quick access to all of its contents as soon as you get to your destination. There’s also multiple internal pockets for organizing your stuff, an exterior slack pocket for keeping small items within easy reach, military-grade YKK zippers, and heavily-padded shoulder straps for comfort when carrying heavy loads. The bag, by the way, is designed to sit high on the back to place most of the weight on the shoulders and upper back.

The GoRuck x Huckberry Slick is available now, priced at $295.
