Folding knives are awesome, allowing you to keep a handy blade in your pocket than you can reach for anytime you need one. Depending on the knife, though, deploying the blade can be a hit-or-miss experience, which can lead to serious compromise when pulling it out in self-defense situations. That shouldn’t be a problem with the Gerber US Assist S30V.

Equipped with a ball-bearing release mechanism (which they call Balls of Stainless Steel… really), the knife offers what the outfit claims is the smoothest, most consistent deployment in their arsenal, with minimal friction and reliable performance for the long haul. That way, you can trust the blade will be out there, ready to cut, slice, and rip any time you need it, eliminating a common headache that plague plenty of folders.

The Gerber US Assist S30V has a blade measuring three inches long, with an overall length of 7.2 inches with the slicer deployed. Thumb studs on either side of the handle allow one-handed opening with either hand, with a plunge-lock mechanism allowing to fold it back just as easily. Blade comes with a stone-washed finish, which should help it hide minor scratches the blade is bound to incur over the years, with a cross-bolt safety ensuring it locks in place whether the darn thing is deployed or folded down. It comes with a glass-filled nylon handle.
