BioLite has plenty of options in camp lighting, from straightforward camping lanterns to multi-purpose LED devices. Unlike the outfit’s typical camping lamps, the BioLite AlpenGlow 500 doesn’t just look to provide straightforward utility, coming with elements that allow it to provide a more fun and playful function.
Like other camp lighting, it comes in a size that’s ideal for setting down on tabletops and hanging on tents, allowing you to use it to illuminate different areas around camp. Unlike most of them, it comes with multi-color LEDs and an accelerometer, both of which enable entirely new functions not traditionally found in camping lanterns.
The BioLite AlpenGlow 500 is equipped with multi-color LEDs that combine to deliver 500 lumens of total illumination, which should be plenty of brightness for most small camp sites. More importantly, though, those LEDs are equipped with the outfit’s ChromaReal LED technology that, the outfit claims, will enable it to provide complete and accurate lighting, regardless of what color settings you’re trying to recreate. According to BioLite, this technology ensures that the lighting will allow colors to pop and textures to stand out, ensuring it delivers useful lighting around camp, whether you’re using the cool white light to illuminate a nighttime task, the warm white light to read outside before retiring, or the multi-color setting to recreate the look of early dawn skies inside your tent.
That’s right, it has a multi-color setting that turns it into ambient lighting simulating either early sunrise or gloomy night skies, so it can be used to set the mood at camp, instead of just glowing a bright white light like any traditional lamp. Even better, there’s a one-color cycling mode that makes it glow in one hue at a time for an ever-changing color backdrop, as well as a multi-color party mode that makes the light shine in multiple ever-changing colors at the same time. That’s right, you can use this to provide fancy colored lighting for a party at camp. Heck, they even threw in a fireworks mode that, we imagine, makes it switch into multiple colors in a way that resembles an aerial light show.
The BioLite AlpenGlow 500 is equipped with a 6,400 mAh battery that keeps it running for five hours on high brightness (500 lumens) and 200 hours on the lowest (5 lumens), so you can stretch the battery life as needed, all while fully charging within three hours of being plugged into a 5V power source. Like any proper camping lamp, it’s water-resistant to IPX4 standards, so you don’t have to worry about rain, splashes, or spilled beer ruining your camp lighting. The lantern measures 5.4 x 3.8 inches (height x diameter).
In case you’re wondering what the accelerometer does, you’re supposed to be able to shake the lamp to trigger a flicker mode that converts the light quality to resemble a candle’s glow. Oh yeah, if a 500-lumen lamp is too much for your needs, you can also opt for a 250-lumen version that integrates the same feature set.
The BioLite AlpenGlow 500 is available now, priced at $79.95.
