It may not have a name that rolls off the tongue, but the ECWCS W3X Utility Jacket from Alpha Industries is the kind of outerwear you’ll want to reach for during those times you’re facing extreme cold. ECWCS, after all, stands for Extended Cold Weather Clothing System, so this should handle the biting cold with serious aplomb.

If you’re not familiar with Alpha Industries, they started out as a protective clothing supplier for the US Department of Defense (DOD), for which they produced (and continue to produce) numerous jackets and trousers that found their way to armed forces personnel stationed in less-than-toasty conditions. As such, their retail offerings tend to be dripping in the same style and function as their military counterparts, sporting rugged silhouettes and delivering serious performance.

Modeled after the army’s own ECWCS clothing program, the ECWCS W3X Utility Jacket is part of a collection of cold weather garments that are designed for layering, depending on the prevailing weather wherever you are. In particular, they recommend it be worn alone on top of your usual ensemble on moderately chilly days and supplemented with the company’s Fleece Lining underneath for colder ones. It features a waxed cotton rip-stop shell in a relaxed fit, cotton lining, a zippered front closure, snap-close storm flap, and adjustable hood/cuffs. For storage, you get two lower pockets and a left sleeve pocket, all of them reinforced with Velcro closures.
