Laces on shoes can be annoying – you have to tie them every time, they dangle (unless you tuck them somewhere), and they can come loose at any point. Problem is, there’s still nothing that seals shoes better while applying the right kind of pressure, making them a constant fixture in performance footwear. That doesn’t mean no one’s looking for an alternative. The new Adidas Ace 16+ Purecontrol, for instance, ditches the laces in favor of a thermoplastic urethane cage.

A football shoe, the design aims to eliminate the impact of laces during kicks, removing a hard-to-predict variable that can change outcomes when trying to control the ball. Adidas calls it the first high-performance laceless football boot in the world, although we imagine Lotto will have some objections about that, considering they’ve been producing the similarly laceless Zhero Gravity Ultra since 2010.

The Adidas Ace 16+ Purecontrol replaces the laces with three key points of stability that lock the foot into the shoes. The aforementioned TPU cage is in charge of securing the mid-foot, with both the upper and an internal knitted locking system serving to further anchor the foot in place. With a large unimpeded surface area right on the mid-foot, the company claims the boot will allow players to generate more power and improve their accuracy during strikes. Features include a Primeknit upper that combines tight and loose knits to create an optimum fit, an enlarged heel pocket, and a redeveloped sole plate that helps reduce the footwear’s weight.

No pricing yet, but the Adidas Ace 16+ Purecontrol will make its field debut on Mesut Ozil of Arsenal during the team’s scheduled game on Sunday.
