It’s not every day you see a pair of loudspeakers covered in a cement enclosure, but that’s exactly what you’re getting with the Vonschloo L242. When they’re promising a “sophisticated sound experience” along with that unusual enclosure, how can we not be intrigued?

Inspired by an archaic sound object long used in the Swiss alps called “Folle,” the speakers actually look like a semi-conical stage light when viewed from the sides. Except, you know, with an outer shell decked in cold cement, giving it a unique presence that should stand out in most any living environment. Each housing is crafted by hand out of Switzerland, with much of the components put together in a similar manual fashion.

Unlike many modern loudspeakers, the Vonschloo L242 adheres more closely to tradition. As such, they’re fashioned as passive stereo speakers that come in pairs and require hooking up to an amplifier to guarantee the best audio experience. If you’re setting them up on a shelf, they offer a simple cylindrical bar that perches it stably on flat ground, while those with ample floor space can opt for a wireframe floor stand inspired by 50s and 60s aesthetics. Features include a point source two-way coaxial driver unit from Seas Norway, a frequency range of 73 – 22’000 Hz, and gold-plated connectors. The cement exterior of the enclosure is joined by various wood and metal parts, along with a fabric grille out front.
