Everyday watches tend to be put through plenty of abuse, which is why they tend to be made from steel or titanium rather than more precious but softer metals like gold. And while carbon fiber watches should hold up even better, most every other release that uses the material have tended to be priced along the range of premium Swiss watches, making them just a little out of reach for a good chunk of guys who put on a timepiece as part of their everyday accessories. That, however, isn’t the case for the Ventus Black Kite.

Built to withstand the rigors of daily use, the watch combines a carbon fiber shell with sapphire crystal, combining the ultra-durable case material with the most scratch-resistant glass. Whether you’re wearing it to a busy field site, a rowdy party, or a rugged week-long hike, this thing should hold up better to the kind of abuse any watch is going to encounter along the way.

The Ventus Black Kite has a dial based on the classic pilot watch developed by the RLM during World War 2. It comes in three variants: one with a Type A dial with white indicators, another with the same dial with yellow indicators, and a third one with a Type B dial with yellow indicators.   While the face stays faithful to the original pilot watch design, it uses a dial that creates a layered visual effect when viewed up close for added flair.

Features include a 42mm case, 100 meters of water resistance, and Seiko NH35 automatic movement. Construction is Darkwood carbon fiber, which layers the material in a configuration that resembles wood patterns, along with an inner steel structure.

A Kickstarter campaign is currently running for the Ventus Black Kite. Pledges to reserve a unit starts at $399.
