Thermacell Backpacker Mosquito Repeller Designed to power using a camping fuel canister, this device creates a 225-square foot safe zone where mosquitoes and other bugs can't enter.

If you hate dealing with mosquitoes during camping, there’s a good chance you’ve already tried Thermacell’s butane-powered solution for creating a mosquito-free zone. Yes, we’re big fans of that. The Thermacell Backpacker Repeller does, pretty much, the same thing. Instead of requiring a butane cartridge, however, it’s designed to simply mount onto those fuel canisters you probably stock if you’re a frequent camper, making it a whole lot easier to integrate into your regular gear.

Once set up and running, the device can create a 15 x 15 foot safe haven around it that can keep mosquitoes, black flies, and a few other types of bugs from entering. No, it doesn’t quite create an invisible force field. Instead, it merely disperses a synthetic derivative of the natural chemical allethrin, which drives away those pesky bugs that tend to create an irritation whenever you’re slumming it around the backcountry.

The Thermacell Backpacker Repeller measures just 9.7 x 5 x 6.7 cm (h x w x l), so it should be small enough to fit in an exterior pocket on your pack. It still requires you to insert one of Thermacell’s repellent mats that carry the active ingredient, each of which comes with 12 hours’ worth of insect repellant. During use, you simply insert one of those mats, mount the device onto a fuel canister (that isn’t empty, of course), and start it up (it has an integrated Piezo lighter). A single 100-gram gas canister is enough to keep it running for up to 80 hours.
