Shimano’s name continues to ring strong when talking about performance bicycle parts, which is why it’s easy to forget they also make cycling shoes. Part of that, of course, is also the fact that their footwear line hasn’t really evolved to match the industry’s current trends. The company is hoping to change that with the Shimano RP9.
Billed as their “flagship road performance shoe,” it’s designed for long days on the bike, providing an ideal balance of comfortable wear and optimal power transfer. Whether you’re training for a race, riding the scenic route, or zipping through traffic around the city, it promises to deliver premium comfort and maximum efficiency the entire time.
The Shimano RP9 takes on a distinctive but unassuming appearance, with no flashy colors, no loud branding, and no racing stripes – just a minimalist aesthetic that’s designed to blend in seamlessly. It’s made from a synthetic material that’s lighter, stronger, and more durable than natural leather, with asymmetric straps for relieving the usual pressure points on the feet. Both the upper and insole use Shimano’s heat-moldable custom fit technology to ensure a performance-enhancing fit (you’ll have to take it to a certified dealer to perform the custom fitting, although you can do it at home if you’re willing to take the risk), with an adaptable closure system that adjusts to different instep heights and shapes.
For comfort, it comes with an air vent on the toe, exhaust ports on the sole, and a comfortable surround upper pattern that still delivers plenty of holding power. Features include an ultra-rigid carbon fiber composite sole, an anti-bacterial foam insole, and customizable thermo-foam plastic in the upper.
