In terms of design, the parka was the standout piece in the first-generation of the military’s Extended Cold Weather Clothing System (ECWCS), combining a high-visibility hood, unconventional venting, and massive secret pockets. Problem is, it didn’t breathe all that well when used by active troops, making for an outerwear that veered on the side of uncomfortably hot. The Outlier Supermarine Soft Core Parka takes the styling of the military classic and combines it with modern technical materials that deliver perfectly-balanced insulation.

The new jacket leaves the original jacket’s form nearly untouched, retaining most of the elements that made for such an attractive-looking cut. As such, you get the same high-visibility cobra hood (which is large enough to fit over a soldier’s helmet), zipped arm venting, large cargo pockets, large secret chest pockets, two-way front zip, arm pocket, and hanging loop, along with the same silhouette that looks perfectly at home in a battlefield.

The Outlier Supermarine Soft Core Parka has an outer fashioned in Supermarine Cotton, a yarn-dyed fabric that’s extremely breathable, highly water resistant (the fibers swell up and seal when exposed to water), and completely windproof. This is complemented by 120-gram Primaloft Infinity insulation in the middle, along with a knit and woven merino wool lining to keep things dry, fight odors, and feel completely soft to the touch. It also trades in the usual Velcro for Japanese “Block Tapey” closure, which are quieter to use while being less damaging on the fabric.
