After years of taking pictures with nothing but an iPhone, you’re finally ready to invest in a DSLR. While your first instinct may be to pony up the cash for a full-featured flagship, an entry-level shooter might actually be the smarter alternative, since the simpler feature set means the transition is bound to go a lot smoother. That’s exactly what Canon is counting on with their EOS Rebel T6.

Aimed at novice DSLR users, the camera is designed for ease of use, combining traditional DSLR elements with familiar smartphone talents. Those beginner-friendly features include built-in WiFi for instantly uploading your captures, Instagram-style camera filters, and scene-specific photo settings that automatically calibrate the camera for whatever you’re shooting (there are modes for sports, portraits, and food, among others).

The Canon EOS Rebel T6 pairs an 18-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor with the outfit’s DIGIC 4+ image processor, giving the camera a 1.6x field of view, a full-res continuous shooting rate of 3 fps, and an ISO range of 100 to 6,400 (expandable to 12,800). That expansive ISO range means you can shoot subjects in less-than-ideal lighting situations even without a flash in tow, making it a handy camera for capturing random and fleeting photographic scenes.

Aside from stills, it can shoot 1080p videos at 30 fps. Features include remote shooting capabilities (you can control it using a smartphone app), nine-point autofocus system, an optical viewfinder, a 3-inch LCD with a 170-degree viewing angle, and Scene Intelligent Auto mode for automating exposure and enhancements.

Slated for availability in April, the Canon EOS Rebel T6 is priced at $550 in a one-lens bundle.
